Abstract

The generation of Alfvén waves by an oscillating, electrically conducting boundary was studied theoretically. Evidence concerning the validity of the calculations was obtained by measurements of the damping and period of a torsional pendulum suspended in mercury in the presence of an axial magnetic field. The electrical potential associated with the Alfvén waves was also measured.
