Abstract

From the viewpoints of global warming and utilization of effective renewable energies, introduction of the wind power has been making progress rapidly. Especially in Europe and the United States, the development of the large scale wind turbine system have been prospering to reduce the power generation cost on a large scale in cooperation with various subsidiary policies. In March 2006, METI and NEDO delivered the social image of the technology and strategic roadmap for superconductivity technologies in future 2020. Among these, the technical subjects and market are predicted concerning the rotating machines which utilize superconductor technologies, but there is no detailed study concerning superconducting generator for the wind energy. Many merits are expected for application of superconducting technology to the wind turbine generator, such as downsizing of the nacelles and improvement of the output power. Thus it is necessary to make clear subject such as the configuration to apply superconducting technologies for practical use and the comparison superconducting technologies with conventional technologies. In this study, we made both domestic and overseas survey for the present status of wind power and the market. Furthermore, we examined the concrete specifications requested from the users and performed the conceptual design of the superconducting generator considering the efficiency, installation and operational costs. Thus we confirmed the problems lying about applying superconducting technology to the wind turbine generator and showed the strategy for the clear solution.
