Abstract

High pressure hydrogen gas is used in the Hydrogen society. In Japan, 100 hydrogen stations are planned to be constructed by the end of 2015. One of the issues of the hydrogen station construction is the high cost. In order to decrease the cost, one of the ways is appropriate use of low-cost materials. For the purpose, various material data under the high pressure hydrogen gas are requested. However, evaluations of material properties under high pressure hydrogen gas are difficult because special equipments are necessary and the costs to install those machines are very high. Therefore, an alternative method for the mechanical property evaluation under high pressure hydrogen gas was investigated in this study. A tempered martensitic JIS SCM435 steel with tensile strength of 1000MPa grade was used. Fatigue property was evaluated with cathodic charging with 0.1M NaOH solution and the current density of 100A/m^2. The evaluation result was compared with the fatigue result under 115MPa hydrogen gas environment. The fatigue evaluation result obtained with the cathodic charging method was almost the same as the result under 115MPa hydrogen gas condition.
