Abstract

According to Hobbes, prophetic dreams can be conceived as a justification of ecclesiastical power. For this reason, prophetic dreams tend to dissolution of a Commonwealth. For keeping up Commonwealth, Hobbes shows that dreams have to be separated from prophecies. This act of separating determines the limits of dreams and prophecies. Dreams are situated within the mind and prophecies are situated within the Holy Scriptures. Because of this act of reasoning, the sovereign action against ecclesiastical power is legitimated by Civil Philosophy.
