Abstract

Objective: This research aims to bring together two thought fields - bioethics and sustainability - with the objective to analyze how the principles that underlie the bioethics can assist in strengthening sustainable development practices. Methodology: We chose a qualitative approach used by conducting an observational study in a film narrative, being the narrative selected the movie Avatar, chosen as the data source for this study by the strong presence of elements and characters that facing dilemmas both in the field of bioethics as sustainable development. Results: The analysis of narrative data underscored the need for an expansion or collectivization of reflections on bioethical principles to a more global context, involving different species and ecosystems. The exacerbated individualism seen in the application of his reflections is not, in this sense, able to ensure that practices linked to any dimensions of sustainable considered in this work are respected. Rather, its use in a context limiting or excluding, who disregard the relationships between the various actors of an ecosystem and, in addition, between distinct ecosystems, may incur in the reinforcement of unsustainable practices. Finally, it was possible to realize the strong relationship between bioethics and sustainability. Conclusion: In fact, the principles of bioethics are presented as fundamental principles for the construction and dissemination of practices that respect all dimensions of sustainable development practices, requiring a narrowing of the discussions concerning the two thought fields.
