Abstract
This study presents the results of the global orthotropic elastic behaviour of granular materials due to the fabric variation in the two-dimensional case. It shows that the characteristics of isotropic materials may be simulated by a granular assembly with fabric diagram represented by a circle. On the other hand, the mechanical behaviour of orthotropic elastic materials can be imitated through an elliptical fabric diagram. The larger the ratio between long and short axes of fabric ellipse, the bigger the difference of stiffness ratio. Explicit equations relating the ratio of short to long axis of the ellipse, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio are given and verified by numerical examples.
