Abstract

Splints for the upper extremity can be classified as static or dynamic. Static splints support joints when a few muscles are weak, prevent deformity or maintain corrections accomplished by other means, or immobilize until a fracture unites. Dynamic splints usually support part of a paralyzed extremity, provide motive force for paralyzed muscles, or supply a force to help correct contracture or deformity.
