Abstract

Orthopyroxene-bearing gabbroic xenoliths have been found within the ocean-floor tholeiites recovered from the active volcanic zone of the East Pacific Rise near 12° 50' N. These xenoliths, made up of olivine-orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene-plagioclase assemblages, are believed to represent differentiated plutonic cumulates from a magma chamber located beneath the Rise axis.
