Orthoptics: Theory and Practice.

Abstract

The authors have divided their 258 pages of text into three nearly equal sections: anatomy and physiology of the eye, classification and measurements, and sensory and neuromuscular anomalies. There is a concise appendix which outlines the orthoptic examination, the treatment of heterophoria and heterotropia, plus providing a glossary of terms. In an effort to be comprehensive, much of the text consists of short definitions which is an asset rather than a deficit. Thus, while the glands of the lid are described in a two-line paragraph and the anatomy of the ocular muscles on a third of a page, the accommodation convergence mechanism is thoroughly discussed as are other subjects more pertinent to orthoptics. The book is profusely illustrated with excellent art work by Sallie Gloeckner, which facilitates understanding.
