Abstract

The Orthoptera fauna (grasshoppers, locusts, crickets and katydids) of Southern Mexico is still far from fully documented. Currently there are approximately 400 species recorded for the region, but moderate projections calculate the presence of at least 400 undescribed species. It is not possible to conduct conservation efforts if the diversity remains unknown. Recent discoveries of Orthoptera species new to science, specifically grasshoppers and katydids, are presented here. The current IUCN assessments for Orthoptera are briefly discussed. Challenges such as deforestation for timber or for cleaning areas for crops and cattle are discussed. Future directions such as local communities’ involvement for ecotourism purposes, the use of online platforms, and focus on EDGE (Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered) species are suggested.
