Abstract

Ideally, orthopedic patients should be palpated in both standing and recumbent positions; however, experienced veterinarians may be able to perform a thorough orthopedic examination with the patient standing. General physical and neurologic examination must be performed with the orthopedic palpation. Dogs bear more weight on the thoracic limbs than the pelvic limbs. Causes of lameness will differ by the age, breed, and lifestyle of the dog. Therefore, the orthopedic examination can focus more on areas prone to disease based on patient signalment. The shoulder and brachial regions are commonly affected with: OCD, supraglenoid tubercle physeal/avulsion fracture, bicipital tendinitis, and so on. For examination purposes, the pelvic limb can be anatomically divided into the lumbosacral, hip/pelvis, femur, stifle, tibia/fibula, tarsal, and distal/paw regions. The lumbosacral region is commonly affected with: lumbosacral disease, anomaly, infection, and lumbosacral fracture/luxation from trauma.
