Anesthesiol Clin. 2014 Dec;32(4)) with updates and “deeper dives” into some of the topics relevant to clinical practice and outcomes that orthopedic anesthesiologists wake up and go to sleep with every workday.Importantly, this project was conceived and realized under the extreme circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic and unprecedented work force shortages, including academic human resources. We were very lucky to tap into the tremendous wealth of knowledge shared by a joint team of experts from North America and Europe that made our ambitious plan possible, despite significant setbacks and with only minor goal and scope resets. In this issue, important up-to-date reviews of outcomes after orthopedic trauma surgery, multimodal analgesia, same-day arthroplasty surgery, pediatric regional anesthesia in orthopedic surgery, and opioid-sparing techniques are enriched by a timely review of relevant blood-conservation strategies and are further “spiced up” by an update on innovative methods to extend postoperative analgesia and discussions of controversial topics, such as rebound pain after peripheral nerve blocks, and acute compartment syndrome and regional anesthesia. And, finally, it is adorned by an opinion piece by prominent orthopedic trauma surgery colleagues, providing a glimpse into their viewpoints, biases, and appreciation of the complex multidisciplinary care for our patients. With our humility, deep respect, and best wishes to the Anesthesiology Clinics readership, we would also like to express our profound gratitude to our distinguished Team:To our authors, for their selfless work and readiness to generously share unparalleled individual and collective expertise! To our publishing production team, for their unwavering support, patience, and understanding! To all our families, for their unconditional love and support during these many hours of “after hours” and weekend work!
