Abstract

Second language learning (SLL) involves learning a non-native language, including reading, writing, and listening skills. Students often commit orthographic errors, which are unconsciously or inadvertently written without proper spelling. This paper investigates the main causes of spelling errors among Pakistani English Language Learners at school levels specifically targeting high schools in the rural area of Punjab, Pakistan, known as Toba Tek Singh. This study uses a questionnaire and test-taking method with a sample of 300 girls and boys students from 9th and 10th standard through systematic sampling in order to collect and analyze data. The current paper discusses the different types of orthographic errors and investigates their reasons. The main premise of the current study was to find out the main causes of spelling errors among Pakistani English Language Learners at the School level. This leads us to a logical conclusion of the main causes of the poor spelling errors being made by the students. This makes us able to put suitable suggestions The study identifies the role of teachers in correcting these errors, with suggestions serving as a guide for teachers and recommendations for future research. Teachers play a crucial role in correcting these errors.
