Abstract

To do good dentistry one must plan carefully and have a working knowledge of the concepts and mechanical principles involved in making each procedure integrated so that proper function and balance can be obtained. Proper repositioning of teeth is frequently indicated in order to achieve best results in periodontal and crown and bridge therapy. Although major orthodontic treatment is required in some cases in order to align all of the teeth in the mouth, there are many cases which require only minor tooth movement for paralleling of teeth, as well as bringing migrated teeth back to their most favorable positions. A technique of minor tooth movement through the use of elastic thread ligature has been shown in order to accomplish minor tooth movements in a simple manner. The elastic thread ligature can be used in a great many ways in order to accomplish individual tooth movements. The dentist must think in terms of anchorage when moving teeth and try to take advantage of the stronger teeth as anchor units, and thus move the migrated teeth toward the stronger units. Through understanding functional occlusion the dentist can properly restore mouths to a good state of health by making use of all available fields of dentistry.
