Orthodontic Closure of Open Bites With Temporary Anchorage Devices

Abstract

Anterior open bite malocclusions are difficult to manage. This is because ideal results are frequently difficult to achieve, and even if possible, relapse rates are usually higher than routine orthodontic treatment. Traditional orthodontic treatment options include extrusion of anterior teeth, which is prone to relapse and is often associated with high root resorption rates, or intrusion of posterior teeth, which is difficult to achieve. Orthognathic surgery is often a more ideal option; however, insurance coverage for these procedures is dismal, and patients frequently decline surgery due to increased costs and/or risks. The use of temporary anchorage devices may provide a predictable option for posterior dental intrusion. This presentation will outline the method by which this can be accomplished, and discuss the question “What type of relapse is associated with correction of a musculoskeletal malocclusion by dental intrusion?”
