Abstract
The rate of ortho-para conversion of H 2 and D 2, diluted in solid HD, is calculated on the basis of magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, modulated by lattice vibrations, between the nuclear spins of the H 2 or D 2 and those of the neighboring HD's. The Debye model is assumed for the lattice vibration. The calculated conversion rate is 0.893%/hr for H 2, which is in agreement with the observed rule, and 0.482%/hr for D 2.
