Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the factors that prevent middle school students from participating in leisure activities. A total of 200 secondary school students, 100 male and 100 female who are studying in Samsun and determined using the random sampling method, participated in this research. In the study, “Leisure Barriers Scale-18”, which was developed by Alexandris and Carroll (1997), adapted to Turkish by Karakucuk and Gurbuz (2007), and whose factor structure was retested by confirmatory factor analysis by Gurbuz et al (2012), was used as the data collection tool. The scale consists of 18 items and 6 sub-dimensions. In the analysis of the data obtained in the research, t test, ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used. As a result of the study, it was found that there were significant differences between the participants' leisure disability scores, gender, active sports, age and grade levels (p<0.05). Findings obtained from the research show that participation of students in recreational activities is affected depending on the situation of sports, age, gender and grade level. Therefore, more importance should be given to sports, cultural, social and artistic activities so that students can use their free time efficiently.
