Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the middle school managers’ levels of knowledge about new approaches in science education and application levels of these new approaches within school leadership at the institutions they work for. The study was conducted with 12 middle school managers, who work in Ankara. Qualitative research is adopted as a method in this study and case study is choosen. In this context, the interviews were carried out with 12 school managers, who Works in Ankara. 14 questions were asked to school managers in company with a semi-structered interview form, of which has validity and relialibility was ensured. Besides, each school manager was interviewed and each school manager’s visit to science course was observed during two hours. According to data, which were taken from interviews and observations, it is appeared that school managers do not know sufficiently the component of changes which are occurred in science education and current new approaches. Besides, it is determined that school managers have some leadership styles. It is recommended that there can be given some seminars and trainings to school managers regarding science teaching programme to school managers, and school managers can carry out some assessment meetings periodically related to students’ science achievement with science teachers.
