Abstract

The study aimed to describe the clinical and dental features of 2 children diagnosed with severe microcephaly. Brazilian children of both sexes with brownish skin color and complete primary dentition presented oral hygiene difficulties as the main complaint. During anamnesis, 3 dimension (3D) cephalic perimeter reduction in occipitofrontal circumference at birth, intellectual deficit with history of respiratory complications, controlled seizures, and motor and visual impairments were reported. Extraoral clinical and functional examinations verified predominantly oral breathing, with no passive lip sealing and atypical lingual interposition. Intraoral examination revealed grinding of teeth, the presence of a biofilm, chewing on the left side, and deterioration of the occlusal surfaces of primary molars. Knowledge of facial morphology and orofunctional disorders of patients with special care needs in early childhood will allow health professionals to perform preventive and interceptive procedures in these individuals, essential points for defining a prognosis and the elaboration of a health care protocol.
