Abstract

Publications are among AGU's main products, and for most AGU members, published papers are the goals of their scientific endeavors. While we have watched the numbers of published pages grow and the journals multiply, we have rarely studied other aspects of our publications in a statistical fashion. In an attempt to learn which groups financially support the research reported and to learn something about the authors, we examined the acknowledgments and authors' affiliations in each papers of AGU's seven scientific journals for the calendar year 1986.The source of funding was assumed to be the agency acknowledged in the paper. For each journal, we identified whether one of the U.S. government agencies, a U.S. university, a private U.S. group, or a non‐U.S. group provided the financial support. The results are shown in Table 1, where the body of the table shows the percentage of total acknowledgments for each journal.
