Abstract

ABSTRACT The article focuses upon the hospitalitas as it is presupposed in the letter of Ambrose to the new installed bishop Vigil of Trent and looks for the historical background, especially given in the laws of the Emperor collected in Codex Theodosianus VII (De metatis). This leads to a detailed image of the ancient territory of Trent and the special strategic importance of the city and other places nearby. A comparison with the informations about Antiochia and the places where public activities of welfare for the benefit of the society were gathered shows how intensively the classic traditions were still alive in the more and more Christianized atmosphere of the 4th century.
