Abstract

Abstract Music therapy in neonatal intensive care is based on 35 years of music-medical and music therapy research and clinical practice as well as on cumulative knowledge of premature and newborn infant development and physiological responsiveness to music and musical elements. During these years music therapists have developed different methods ranging from medical music therapy to psychotherapeutic oriented methods. Their clinical work is based on individualized musical stimuli, often by including the mother/parents. All interventions are based on a detailed assessment of the infant and careful observation of the infant’s response to sensory stimulation. This paper provides an overview of evidence based music therapy methods worldwide, followed by differences, similarities, and common requirements.
