Abstract The values of the 'original' and 'future' reciprocal semimajor axes are calulcated for 36 recent osculating cometary orbits. The results are compared with the computations of Yabushita and Hasegawa (1989). Adjustments for deriving original and future orbits are given for nine other recent comets for which only parabolic orbit determinations are available. Specific attention is given to the physical comet pair 1987 XXX/1988 III.
