Abstract

In order to clarify the origin of the hump which is often observed on the left shoulder of XRD peaks in both fully and partially stabilized zirconia, microstructural changes, in particular changes in the hump, in yttria-stabilized zirconia with aging and changes in dopant concentration, were investigated mainly by XRD. As a result, it is concluded that a hump is caused by lattice distortion, not by the existence of the rhombohedral phase, and the decrease or disappearance of the humps with aging or increasing dopant concentration are caused by the short-range ordering (SRO) of oxygen-ion vacancies to Zr ions to relax the anisotropy of periodic lattice distortions.
