Abstract

The purpose of this article is to review what can be inferred about the environment in which life arose. Lines of interfence stem from two types of records. A physical record of geological and astronomical data provides information on the character of Earth's surface during the epoch in which life arose. A biological record of quantitative evolutionnary relationships among modern organisms documents early Earth's environment because it points to some properties of the first cells.
