Abstract

Indirect UV detection of the nonionic sample butanol is achieved on a Partisil 10 ODS-3 HPLC column by adding a constant concentraion of anionic probe naphthalene-2-sulfonate (NS - ) to the mobile phase. Butanol elution is detected as a positive peak and is followed by a negative system peak. This patterns of peaks suggests that in the presence of butanol, the sorption of NS - is decreased. The reason why this is so was investigated by measuring the simultaneous sorption of butanol and NS - on a small (≃0.1 g) column of the ODS packing via the column equilibration technique
