Abstract

The problem of the genesis of free radicals encountered in coals, lignites, peats and petroleum is analysed. Two hypotheses concerned with the botanical origin and the effect of natural radioactivity are put forward. Whereas the former is able to give account of the facts for peats, the latter, combined with the geothermal hypothesis, allows us to afford a general solution for this problem.
