Abstract
The first humanoids appeared on Earth about 3 million years ago in east Africa. They were present in Asia about 1.5 m years ago, and by 500 000 bp humanoids were widely distributed in the Old World. At this stage hominid stature and brain volume were close to those of modern man, and around 50 000 bp the modern Homo sapiens was well established.
