Abstract
The upstream migration of imagines of the stonefly Capnia atra Mort. was studied at the outlet of Lake Saggat in Swedish Lapland. The stoneflies emerged from an ice-free rapid and walked on the snow-covered ground towards the edge of the forest about 50 m from the rapid. At 50 and 150 m inside the forest their direction was found to have changed, and they were running upstream or in an acute angle towards the water which was invisible to them. When not seeing the forest from the water's edge, they immediately started moving upstreams.
