Abstract

Starting from a basic analysis of birefringence in glassy polycarbonate, two phenomenologically different sources and thus two types of birefringence, the orientational and the stress birefringence, are described. Both contribute to the overall birefringence of optical disk (0D) substrates. Some evaluations and data for each type of birefringence are presented.
