Abstract

Lobsters walk upstream toward the source of odor carried by a water current. They do not orientate when odor is distributed uniformly in the water. They follow odor trails in the absence of water current. Orientation appears to result from differential stimulation of bilateral chemoreceptors, the animal turning or moving toward the side of maximum stimulation.
