The competition between insertion and abstraction mechanisms for reactions of a hydrogen atom and an interhalogen molecule has been investigated for two extreme orientations of the target molecule. It is shown to be possible to obtain both hydrogen halide products irrespective of the angle of attack of the incoming atom.
