Abstract

The overall objective is to understand the adverse effects and dangers associated with the inappropriate use of these medications, as well as the importance of professional guidance for safe weight loss. The methodology adopted was an integrative literature review, with searches in the LILACS and SCIELO databases, between 2019 and 2024, using terms such as “use”, “medication” and “weight loss”. Inclusion criteria were articles relevant to the topic, published in Portuguese and available in full. Editorials, reports and bulletins were excluded. In development, the study addresses obesity as a multifactorial condition, commonly associated with an energy imbalance. It discusses the use of semaglutide, a medication used off-label for weight loss, highlighting its mechanisms of action, efficacy and side effects. It is concluded that, despite the benefits in weight reduction, the indiscriminate use of semaglutide without medical guidance can lead to serious complications. Pharmacists play an essential role in guiding patients on the safe use of these medications, promoting an integrated and safe approach to weight loss. The study emphasizes the importance of responsible and informed practices for managing obesity, preventing risks to physical and mental health.
