Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a global epidemic, reaching 14.1% of the Portuguese population. Physical exercise is one of the pillars of the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Regular physical exercise improves glycaemic control, insulin sensitivity, lipid profile and regulates blood pressure. High-intensity interval training (HIIT), indicated for younger individuals with better physical condition, demonstrated superior efficacy to low-intensity exercise. Training combined with aerobic and resistance exercise shows superior results than either mode alone, with a greater reduction in haemoglobin A1c (HA1c).
