Abstract

Abstract In this study, we provided a solvent-free method to modify allyl methacrylate (AMA) with 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane (MDHM) through hydrosilylation reaction catalyzed by Speier’s catalyst. The results from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and ultraviolet spectrometer (UV) clearly indicated that AMA was modified by MDHM through the hydrosilylation on the C C of isopropenyl segment with the C C of propenyl group remaining to obtain unsaturated acrylate containing organosiloxane chain segment. We also studied the application of MDHM modified AMA in waterborne self-matting styrene-acrylic emulsions through in-situ copolymerization. The surface gloss, wettability, chemical composition and morphology of the prepared emulsion coating films were investigated. The results showed that organosiloxane chain segments were successfully introduced, which made film get a fine rough surface, which increase the film surface water contact angle and help to obtain a kind of waterborne semi-gloss styrene-acrylic resin film.
