Abstract
Thermal decarbonylation of (η 5-C 5H 5)Fe(CO)(PPh 3COR proceeds via the initial formation of (η 5-C 5H 5)Fe(CO) 2R and PPh 3 as the kinetically favoured process. A kinetic investigation of this initial step for the title complexes exhibits a relative rate of phosphine loss Me 3SiCH 2 > Me 2PhSiCH 2 > CH 3 reflecting the steric bulk of the groups involved.
