Abstract
Organometallic chemistry has enabled the discovery of the first organic magnets, i.e. those with unpaired electron spins in the p orbitals, and the first organic magnet with a magnetic ordering temperature exceeding room temperature. The reaction of Fe II(C 5Me 5) 2 and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) forms the electron transfer salt [Fe(C 5Me 5) 2] +[TCNE] −, which is a bulk ferromagnet below 4.8 K. In contrast, the reaction of either V(C 6H 6) 2 or V(CO) 6 and TCNE forms V(TCNE) x · y(solvent), which is a bulk ferrimagnet below its thermal decomposition temperature of 350 K with a T c∼400 K.
