Abstract

The reduction of benzylidenemalononitriles by chiral aromatic organomagnesium halides and the same kind of reduction where there is no or one phenyl group gives opposite stereochemistry. These results suggest the existence of a donor—acceptor interaction between the phenyl groups in one of the transition states.
