Abstract

Despite impressive progress in the field of preventive medicine, we are desperately lagging in the applica tion of known preventive measures for many disease problems in our society. While the utopia of optimum health for all people may never be realized, fuller utilization of existing knowledge of preventive medicine should be anticipated. The achievement of this, however, requires recognition by indi viduals, families, and communities that this type of medicine is an enormous challenge. Unless we are willing to commit ourselves to the development and organization of preventive medical services, our energies and investigative efforts will be consumed in restoring health that was lost because prevention was not carried out.
