Abstract

The concept of modem discipline as presented by Michel Foucault has several interesting consequences for sociology, especially organizational sociology. On the one hand, the advent of rationalism and the scientific approach to military matters, widely popularized by the seemingly perfect correlation between discipline and success during the 18th century, brought with it a completely new idea of discipline and a new doctrine of military education that spread into other fields. On the other hand, the new theories and practices did not automatically make the armies into pliant tools for their masters. Discipline as such did not and does not ensure efficiency or goal-attainment. Swedish 18th century war history delivers empirical examples of the development. The article ends with some notes on the debate on Foucault's power concept.
