Abstract
This research investigates the effects of professional and nonprofessional types of organizational involvement on the compatibility of organizational and professional commitments for junior college teachers. Hypotheses are examined about the effects of professional and nonprofessional criteria of performance, authority over subordinates, and kind of supervision on the compatibility of these two commitments. It was found that the two commitments are more likely to be compatible when the involvement is professional than when it is nonprofessional. The implications of this for the treatment of professional employees are discussed.
