Abstract

Comprehensive management of cleft and craniofacial patients should be kept to a high standard abroad, as well as here at home. The team approach to field mission support clinics that was described here has proved to be a valuable educational and emissarial tool in Third World countries. Not only do all of the participating team and host members benefit from the interaction, but most importantly, the patients benefit from the longitudinal and systematic approach, gaining better results with consistent treatment philosophies and follow-up studies. Our hope is for the surgical safari to end, with host institutions linking across borders for expanded locations and facilities. Our efforts thus far have been met with overwhelming approval and wholehearted participation by the local clinicians.
