Abstract

The author had earlier proposed formation of Organisation of Petroleum Importing Countries(OPIC) to combat OPEC and control oil prices. Ethanol is being projected as a solution to all oil related problems. Many argue that ethanol can replace all transportation related fuel requirements. There is some element of truth in this. However agricultural productivity would need to increase 5-10 times for this to happen. It is argued that this will happen in next 20-30 years. Hence ethanol as replacement for oil is doubtful. One way to enable ethanol is to free land by shifting to vegetarianism, so that precious land used to feed livestock can be used to grow energy crops. OPIC needs to support research to increase productivity of energy crops and a strongly advocate vegetarianism so that land is made available for growing energy crops.
