Abstract
The government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Saudi Arabia) has started implementing the National Transformation Program (NTP) that aims to achieve government operational excellence, improve economic factors, and improve living standards as the country faces a high annual population growth rate and rapid urbanization. These increases lead to an increase in the levels of different waste products, which also lead to an increase in environmental pollution, the spread of diseases, harmful gases, and unwanted odors. One of the serious challenges facing the authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is managing this municipal solid waste (MSW) in a sustainable way that ensures reducing the resulting damage and using it to generate environmentally friendly energies. According to recent studies, organic waste is the largest component of waste generated in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which makes the process of sorting organic waste an essential requirement for any waste system applied inside the country. This paper aims to suggest an automated system for sorting organic waste using the Internet of things in Mecca city. The proposed system aims to achieve the maximum benefit at a low cost and contribute to preserving the environment during the Hajj and Umrah period. The proposed system used emerging technology to separate, collect and manage waste in the holy city.
