Abstract

It is a great pleasure to review this important book, which has now attained considerable status as the reference book for organic psychiatry throughout the world. I was privileged enough to review the first edition, which Lishman published in 1978 and which, including the index, contains 999 pages. This latest edition, including the index, runs to a lesser 952 pages. The uninitiated might think that Lishman, in spite of an incredible explosion of knowledge in the field that he is discussing, has been forced to abbreviate. However, nothing could be further from the truth. The pale green cover of the first edition, measuring some six by nine inches, has been transformed into the much more luscious blue and red front of the book, which now measures nine by eleven inches. One disadvantage of this transformation is the inability of the new edition to fit into any section of the bookcase, except the lower one usually retained for coffee-table size art books.
