Abstract

AbstractThe interaction of white phosphorus and formaldehyde in water/methanol in the presence of a base is described. A mechanism accounting for the formation of HOCH2PO3H2, (HOCH2)2PO2H and CH3(HOCH2)PO2H is proposed. Chlorination of these products to give ClCH2P(O)Cl2, (ClCH2)2P(O)Cl, and CH3(ClCH2)P(O)Cl is also reported.
