Abstract

In an average, taking together the direct effect on rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. IR-8) and residual effect on wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Sonalika), grown successively in an alluvial soil (Flu-vaquent), rice straw manure (RS) + rock phosphate (RP), farm yard manure (FYM) and ammonium sulphate (AS) + RP helped in the accumulation of the highest amount of free amino acids, reducing sugars, and organic acids, respectively, in the rhizosphere soils. Amino acid and reducing sugar content of the rice rhizosphere under their direct influence of the manures were less than those of the wheat rhizosphere under their residual influence. For organic acids the situation was opposite. The concentrations of all the above organics increased with the age of the crop in the rice rhizosphere, while the reverse was true for the wheat rhizosphere residually. Serine was exclusively the product of the rhizosphere effect of rice, especially under RS with RP or AS, while histidine, leucine, proline, and xylose were that of wheat under the residual influence of different manures. AS + RP, RS + AS, and TC directly in the rice rhizosphere and RS + RP directly as well as residually in the rice and wheat rhizosphere, respectively, resulted in the accumulation of malic acid.
