Abstract

AbstractThis chapter places organic farming within the current World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations. It looks at the WTO negotiations on agriculture and on trade/environment linkages and points to possible consequences for organic farmers. It is suggested that the trend toward agricultural liberalization may pose a threat to organic farmers, but may also strengthen agricultural development in a number of countries and lead to positive spill-over effects, where the food standards and organic farm principles gain a broader international recognition. Moreover, there may be new opportunities for providing non-production distorting subsidies based on environmental and non-trade concerns; clearer rules for labelling; and improved market access for organic products. This could expand the options for organic farmers.
