Abstract

Cultures of adult organs require a higher oxygen tension for maintenance than cell or embryonic organ cultures. Better results are obtained in oxygen than in air and to obtain even higher oxygen tensions, culture under hyperbaric oxygen has been carried out. This has involved the construction of a special stainless steel pressure chamber which is described. Some tissues and organs are found to be preserved at hyperbaric pressure but to degenerate at lower pressures of oxygen, in others the reverse is the case. The adrenal gland is particularly interesting in so far as the medulla and various cortical zones react differently to various oxygen tensions.
