Abstract

“FIND THE WORDS BELOW which are closeted in the puzzle. They are trapped vertically, horizontally diagonally , backwards and forwards . Circle them so they can come out and be blatant!” This sentence accompanied the pictured word search in the May 1981 issue of Matrix Magazine. There are fifty-one words total, including: separatist , self-defense, tickle, quest, monogamous, parthenogenesis , fuzzy, gay, play, femme, blood, closet, talk, goddess, and womyn. Matrix magazine, a feminist/ lesbian magazine located in Olympia, Washington, was published monthly between 1979 and 1983. It included original artwork, poems, letters, and text by and for women. Subjects covered — many particular to the Northwest — include incarceration, Native rights, reproductive health, and police violence. Matrix is a part of the Gay and Lesbian Periodicals Collection (MSS 2988-7) at the Oregon Historical Society (OHS). It is part of the larger Gay and Lesbian Archives of the Pacific Northwest (GLAPN), which was founded in the early 1990s by Tom Cook and continues to collect archival materials and oral histories from organizations and individuals active in LGBTQ issues. This collection is available to researchers and interested members of the community during normal library hours.
